What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Hysterectomy
You’re facing a hysterectomy and have a lot of questions — that’s to be expected. Here’s a thorough overview to answer those questions. Keep reading to find the answers you’re looking for.

At North Atlanta Ob/Gyn, we believe that major decisions about your health deserve clear information and compassionate guidance, and a hysterectomy definitely falls into that category.

We may recommend a hysterectomy (a surgical procedure to remove your uterus) when other treatments haven’t provided relief or aren’t appropriate for your condition.

Common reasons for a hysterectomy include:

For many women, the procedure offers long-term relief and a better quality of life when symptoms have become disruptive or debilitating.

There are several types of hysterectomies, and the approach depends on your diagnosis, anatomy, and personal health goals.

These may include removal of the uterus, the uterus and cervix, or additional structures, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes, when medically necessary.

Our expert fellowship-trained, board-certified obstetrics, gynecology, and urogynecology team at North Atlanta Ob/Gyn in Alpharetta, Marietta, and Atlanta, Georgia, focuses on your unique needs.

Our role is to help you understand why a specific approach is recommended and what it means for your health going forward.

What to expect before your hysterectomy

Preparation starts well before surgery day. During your preoperative visits, we take time to review your medical history, imaging, lab work, and medications. We also talk through the procedure, recovery, and any lifestyle adjustments you may need to make ahead of time.

Before surgery, we may ask you to adjust certain medications, arrange help at home, and plan time away from work or caregiving responsibilities. We encourage you to ask questions and share any concerns so nothing feels rushed or unclear.

Our team works with you to make sure you feel confident and supported as you approach surgery.

What happens on the day of surgery

On the day of your hysterectomy, you arrive at North Atlanta Ob/Gyn, where our team and anesthesia providers guide you through each step.

We may perform the procedure using minimally invasive techniques or through an abdominal approach, depending on your individual situation.

During surgery, we monitor your comfort and safety closely. The length of the procedure and recovery room time can vary, but you’ll spend time waking up under observation before heading home or to an overnight stay if needed.

We make sure you understand what sensations are normal afterward, how you’ll manage pain, and when you’ll be able to eat, walk, and rest comfortably.

Recovery and healing after a hysterectomy

Recovery looks different for every woman, but most healing happens gradually over several weeks. You can expect some fatigue, soreness, and activity restrictions at first. We provide clear guidance on lifting limits, driving, returning to work, and resuming exercise or intimacy.

During recovery, it’s important to listen to your body and give yourself time to heal. Follow-up visits allow us to monitor your progress, address concerns, and adjust recommendations as needed.

Emotional changes are also common, and we’re here to talk through those experiences as well.

Our goal is a successful surgery and a smooth recovery that helps you return to daily life feeling stronger and more comfortable.
